Every book written by Scott Westerfeld is a joy to read because, if not of the story and characterization or the plot, of his writing. It's beautiful and evocative and pulls you onward. Uglies is definitely a page-turner, even if the twists and story can be a little predictable. Scratch that; even if SOME of the twists can be a little predictable. There's one surprise near the end I never expected, and it really packs a punch. And it has this wholesome feeling in that, by the end of it, I felt I knew the world very well and it felt solid and real and well thought-out. That's a rare to come by in the young adult section, and it just thrills me when it happens. It all just leaves you starting for more.
